“I don’t know what I expected to find in Canada. Freedom? A new life? My uncle paid 350 dollars for the ship fare from Germany and he wanted to keep me on the farm for a while to work for one year. But I didn’t like it. I didn’t earn much money. Then I came to Camrose and worked for a Chinese restaurant. They paid me 29 dollars a week. And then in three of four months, I paid the 350 dollars back to my relatives and I came to Edmonton. Lots of people came to Edmonton. You had a better social life, you know.”
